Odysseum-The mouse museum

"The Show with the Mouse" (Sendung mit der Maus) is a highly acclaimed children's series on German television that has been called "the school of the nation". Originally called "Laughing and Learning Stories for Television Beginners", the show has been aired for more than 45 years and has received over 75 awards.

In 2013, the Odysseum Science center Cologne presented a very special challenge to EAS: The science center had planned to build a completely new exhibition called "the mouse museum", based on the TV show. But due to design controversies and the resulting friction with the licensor of the TV series the client had to start the design phase basically from scratch, only weeks away from the planned opening.

 As a result, EAS produced the complete concept design, basic engineering, full set of 3D visuals and construction manuals where necessary within merely 4 weeks after receiving the assignment.

With lots of sweat & night labour, the Mouse museum opnened its doors perfectly on time in September 2013, adding a whole new attraction to the Odysseum science center.

Scope

In this special case EAS was only responsible for the design.

The fabrication and installation was handled by the client (AWC AG / Odysseum) himself.

The major challenge here was to create designs very fast that would satisfy both the client and the licensor, and at the same time be easy enough to execute for the various fabricators that were hired to create the exhibits on the spot.

As the TV series mainly explains the science behind everyday things, such as a bike´s dynamo, or a lock & key, all fully interactive exhibits were designed around enhanced everyday objects.
